Santa Maria Speedway Begins New Era

The year 2013 signifies a new era out at the Santa Maria Speedway. Ruben and Katy Munoz are excited about the upcoming 2013 season and are committed to bringing a quality product to our fans, a quality program for our racers, and first-rate marketing to our sponsor partners. Santa Maria Speedway has been family owned for the past 48 years and Ruben and Katy plan to continue providing exciting entertainment for the community to enjoy for years to come. Along to help the Munoz’s with their goals are a number of returning crew members. David Castaneda will be back in the tower as Event Coordinator and handling various sponsor needs and outside marketing events. And we are happy to have one of the best flagmen in the business, Tom Petersen, back at the flagstand controlling the action. Jim Biggs will return to prep the track surface. Biggs provided some of the best racing surfaces last year and looks to continue to improve the track. Many other key positions have returning personnel that should ensure a smooth racing program and Ruben and Katy look forward to working with the SMS team.
The 2013 schedule has 25 race nights over 24 weekends. The nine total nights of Late Model racing should make for an exciting season. The Late Models schedule includes the 2-day Nationals presented by Coors Light and the Simkins Memorial.
And the seven Sprint Car races will include two USAC/CRA 410 races and the return of the King of the West 410 Winged Sprints. The USAC WC 360’s will be here for two races and the addition of the Rebel Winged 360’s and the new URA Sprints to the line-up will give fans some great sprint racing from which to choose.
Our local classes have also increased their schedule in 2013. The Hobby Stocks will be running a total of 15 point races this season and looks to have a competitive championship chase. The Mini-Stocks have increased their total races to 16 that include an open East vs. West Mini-Stock Shootout that takes place on the last race night of the season. The newly designated Super Stocks will have 10 race nights including an end of season Side Board/Wing race. And we are happy to include four Sport Mod races this season with the hope of including even more next season. The IMCA Modifieds will also have a major presence at SMS in 2013 with 14 races including the Five Star Grafix Modified Clash on August 17th.
And while it looks like our race teams will be plenty busy on the track, they also have the opportunity to be included in a number of our outside events, beginning with our Race Car Show at the Santa Maria Town Center that kicks off our race season each year. This year the car show is a one-day event and takes place outside the Central City Market at the north entrance on Saturday, April 6th from 10am to 7pm. We changed to a one-day event for this year because the inside of the mall was booked with a Boy Scout event. This will, however, bring a lot of kids and their parents to the mall. What a great opportunity to show off your racecar and sponsors to new fans. Ruben is also offering a free pit pass to each racecar that comes out to the car show. If you would like a spot reserved for your racecar contact David Castaneda at (310) 493-4900 or email him at [email protected]
The new year also brings a new look to our website. RaceSantaMariaSpeedway.com will now have an easier way to get details on our schedule and other new features that will be rolled out over the next few weeks. We hope to have online ticket sales up this year and faster race results and video. We will also be keeping you updated on track and parking lot progress as we near our first open practice sessions in March.
So we hope you enjoy the new look of the website. And we look forward to seeing all the fans, family, drivers, and crews at the Santa Maria Speedway! Get Ready! The season begins Saturday, April 13th, 2013.
